Context and challenge

Mykolaiv Emergency Hospital is a key medical center that receives a continuous flow of patients suffering from mine- and explosion-related injuries, as well as complex fractures. The city is under constant bombardment, and the traumatology department is operating at full capacity: the existing surgical facilities are physically unable to cope with the number of emergency procedures.

Solidarity contribution

Our organization has committed to creating an additional operating room dedicated to traumatology. The project предусматриes the conversion of a hospital room and part of a corridor into a modern turnkey operating unit. We are implementing a set of works:

  • reconstruction and reconfiguration: removal of existing structures and creation of a space dedicated to performing surgical procedures;
  • installation of medical ventilation and an oxygen supply system required for complex trauma surgeries;
  • technical finishing works to ensure maximum asepsis.
New challenge

 The situation has worsened due to an unforeseen event. While we were carrying out our project to expand the operating theatre, a flood occurred as a result of a leak in the old operating room, which was still in use. The room has become unsuitable for surgical procedures, while the number of patients requiring trauma surgery continues to grow.

For this reason, we have decided to expand the project: our goal is now not only to create a new surgical space, but also to urgently renovate the damaged old operating block in order to restore the surgical efficiency of the department.

Solidarity contribution

The total budget for building the new facility and fully restoring the old trauma operating room is 8,000,000 UAH.
The current budget for the new operating room (where work is already underway) is 4.3 million UAH.
Funding needed — 3.7 million UAH.

Expected results

 Access to care: the new operating theatre will make it possible to perform up to 1,300 surgeries per year.

Doubling capacity: the restoration of the old operating room will allow this figure to be doubled, significantly reducing waiting times for emergency surgeries.

Strategic resilience: the hospital will have an autonomous and modern operating block capable of withstanding extreme workloads.

Trauma surgeons in Mykolaiv accomplish the impossible every day. Our mission is to provide them with dignified conditions to save lives.
